The E$$ENTIAL MEDICINE$ project is run by the Breaking Good Team at the University of Sydney. Our mission is to make medicines available to the people who need them. We tackle this issue in two ways:

  • First, through design and synthesis of potential new medicines for diseases that don’t get enough attention - such as malaria, mycetoma and tuberculosis

  • Second, we know that some medicines that do exist in the world aren’t available to patients for other reasons such as cost, geographical isolation or misinformation. The E$$ENTIAL MEDICINE$ project focuses on this: how can make sure existing medicines are available to all people and at all times?

This problem is a huge and complex . There are so many issues that impact the accessibility of medicines, from human, to political, to scientific. This is where our research is starting: our aim is to gather information on as many things as possible that impact accessibility to the world's most important medicines.

By involving the public (including school students like you!) in this research, we think we will be able to gather information more widely and quickly than we as scientists would ever be able to on our own. We also think that this is such an important issue, and by involving everyone in this research, we are raising public awareness of the complexities and problems involved.
